The teenage detective, who encouraged more than one generation of girls to look to themselves and their natural abilities to accomplish what they wanted, has turned 80. Girl power, indeed; I’d back Nancy over the Spice Girls any day of the week. I don’t know if I would call her a fictional feminist icon as such, but she must be pretty close. Nancy Drew novels have been translated into more than 25 languages and sold more than 200 million copies worldwide, that’s a whole lotta mystery solving and impression making.
